Suad Joseph Student Paper Award

 

The Association of Middle East Anthropology (AMEA) of the Middle East Studies Association (MESA) is delighted to announce this inaugural year (2023) of the Suad Joseph Student Paper Award. We encourage graduate students and advanced undergraduates to submit papers for consideration. Our award will be given to the paper that best exemplifies an outstanding contribution to the anthropology of the Middle East and North Africa and beyond, including transnational and diasporic MENA communities in Europe, North and South America, and elsewhere. This award is named after the renowned scholar, Dr. Suad Joseph, whose contributions to Middle East anthropology over decades have been invaluable.

Award Components:

  • A monetary prize of $300.
  • Recognition at the AMEA reception at the MESA conference in November 2023 in Montreal.
  • Opportunities for networking with other students and mentorship from faculty in the field.
  • AMEA will facilitate a mentor pairing in the fall.

Eligibility:

  • Enrolled full-time in a degree-granting and accredited institution.
  • A graduate student at any stage in an MA or PhD program or a junior or senior in college.

Paper Components:

  • 15-35 pages long
  • Anthropological focus
  • Regional focus on the Middle East and/or North Africa and/or diasporic communities
  • Excellent standards of writing, argumentation, evidence, and ethnographic representation.
  • Significant contribution to knowledge production.

Submission Instructions:

  • Deadline: September 1, 2023.
  • Email as a document attachment to Sa’ed Atshan at satshan1@swarthmore.edu.
  • Body of email should include full name, email, phone year, major/minor, institution, degree, and expected year of graduation.
  • Notification: early fall 2023
